Do not allow your vacation travels be interrupted by a breakdown. Mechanical collapse in the wintertime can be fatal, so it’s important to have your vehicle checked out at a reliable store before cold weather sets in.
Here are suggestions on choosing a repair facility from the nonprofit National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), the group that tests and certifies automotive technicians.
* Start.
* Ask your friends and associates for their recommendationsconsult local consumer groups.
* Arrange for transportation in advance so that you won’t feel pressured to choose a shop based on the own location.
* Search for a neat, well- organized facility, with vehicles in the parking lot equal in value to your own and modern equipment in the service bays.
* Search for a courteous staff, with a service consultant.
* Search for policies concerning repair costs, diagnostic fees, guarantees and procedures of payment.
* Ask if the repair facility specializes or if it usually handles your type of repair work.
* Look for signs of professionalism in the client support area such as client service awards, community, or civic.
* Look for evidence of qualified technicians diplomas, certificates of advanced course work, and certification by ASE.
* Search for the ASE sign. ASE is dedicated to improving the quality of automotive service and repair through the voluntary testing and certification of automotive technicians. ASE-certified technicians use the blue and white ASE shoulder insignia and carry credentials listing their exact regions of certification. Their employers often display the blue and white ASE sign.
On the road, carry emergency equipment: flares, gloves, boots, ice scraper, high-energy snacks, a blanket, shovel, flashlight, bicycle chains, a few tools, and a cell phone.
