Black Christmas movie review

Listen to this article

This joyous fright-fest was a great surprise by what I was originally expecting. This is another horror movie (from the folks supporting Final Silence great film), but un-like so many other people; it did manage to come up trumps; including The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. This is a movie of Bob Clarkes 1974 classic slasher movie, Black Christmas; that actually came four years before John Carpenters Halloween. Some fans lay claim that it was the first slasher flick.

From the outside, this looks like just the other of the basic theres a psycho hacking up a lot of pretty girls, who are running up the stairs instead of out of the doorway, and to a certain extent thats right, its the way this is hauled that is intriguing and enticing to watch.

The story: crazed killer, Billy Lenz, escapes his psychiatric ward and can be determined to make it to his childhood home, where he was mistreated, by Christmas. Problem is, its own years later and the house has become a Sorority house. Its Christmas Eve and also a whos who of teen/horror girl stars are there to welcome himincluding Melissa (Michelle Trachtenberg, Buffy the vampire slayer celebrity ), Heather (Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Final Destination 3), Dana (Lacey Chabert, Mean Girls) and Kelli (Katie Cassidy, as soon as a stranger calls movie.)

This picture is in fact pretty good, it’s a constant feeling of being observed that runs right through it and adds a sparkle to the scares, and the strain is kept large. The actresses, though spouting some dreadful lines occasionally, also mention some fantastic ones. The acting is pretty good, and since the majority of the major ladies are celebrities, and the majority of these horror celebrities, the audience doesnt guess which is going to make it to the rolling credits. The story-line assembles well, and there’s a mounting strain, since the killer first phones the girls, then begins to do away with them.

A similar story to the first Halloween, using a killer coming home for the holidays, in addition, there are many comparable P.O.V shots of this killer, even watching the girls through the house. Even the Christmas motif lurks in well with the plot, and it comes across in places (especially, the flash-backs to Billy Lenzs childhood) like something, director, Tim Burton, would dream up. The movie gets darker and darker as we move through it, together with some very violent moments, and the music by Shirley Walker is fantastic; capturing terror and Christmas all in one twisted tune. Also, the usage of red and green lighting during (owed to Christmas) is extremely cool, and makes a great atmosphere.

Because of it being put in a Sorority house, which no longer being 1974, some of the dialogue just doesnt cut it. I cant imagine many of these girls remaining house using a crazed serial killer, so simply because they cant find their sorority sister, even believable in 2007 sad, but true. There isalso, regrettably, the bathtub scene, however, its been employed for scares, not thrills, so works.

Right from the start you’ll be able to tellthis isnt your regular run of the mill slasher, it actually comes with a back story, and now we do find ourselves caring for a few of the characters, for instance, Kelli, played by Katie Cassidy is great; and if you loathed Dawn in Buffy the vampire slayer you’re gonna adore this film.
