CCNP / BCMSN Exam Tutorial: VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP)

Listen to this article

Assessing the BCMSN exam and obtaining to the CCNP certification implies discovering and learning details that you weren’t presented with on your CCNA studies. (Yes, I know you’d more than enough particulars afterward, correct?) 1 protocol youve got to find out details about is VTP, which sounded simple enough on your CCNA research! Part of learning the facts is currently mastering the principles, so this tutorial nicely review the basics of VTP.

In show vtp status readouts, the”VTP Operating Mode” is defined as”Server” from default. The more familiar term for VTP Operating Mode is simply VTP ModeServer and Server will be the default. It is through the use of all VTP modes that we can set restrictions on which switches can delete and create VLANs.

In Server mode, a VTP switch can be used to create, modify, and delete VLANs. This means that a VTP installation has to have at least one switch in Server mode, or VLAN development won’t be possible. This is actually the default setting for Cisco switches.

Switches cannot be utilized to create, modify, or delete VLANs. When VTP advertisements inform the Client of all VLAN changes VTP advertisements are listened to by clients and behave accordingly.

VTP Transparent mode actually means that the switch isn’t participating in the VTP domain as Clients and Servers do. (Bear with me here.) Transparent VTP switches do not synchronize their own VTP databases along with additional VTP speakers. They do not even promote their VLAN data that is own! Therefore, any VLANs created on a Transparent VTP switch won’t be advertised to other VTP speakers in the domain, which makes them important. (I know you remember that phrase from your CCNA research!)

Devices running VTP Transparent style do have a small something to do with all the switches in the VTP domain. When a switch receives a VTP advertisement, that switch will forward that ad .

As VTP Customers is a terrific way to tie VLAN generation abilities down to switches that are under your physical control configuring switches. But this leads to a scenario where only the VTP clients will have ports that belong to a VLAN, however the VLAN has to be created on the VTP server. (VLANs can be created and deleted in transparent style, however, these changes are not advertised to other switches in the VTP domain)
