Americans dispose of more than 700 billion lbs of paper, glass, plastic, timber, food, steel, clothes, electronics and other refuse yearly.
The issue of handling mountains of waste might appear overwhelming, however, experts note there are easy ways for consumers to make a difference daily.
“Old habits might die hard, like forgetting to recycle a pop can or newspaper, however, the fantastic thing is, there are lots of straightforward techniques to decrease waste, from buying focused household products to buying in bulk,” says ecological specialist Kim Carlson.
Carlson Provides the following tips to help consumers reduce, recycle and reuse waste:
* Keep it loose. Purchase other hardware items and screwdrivers, nails in bins that are loose. At the supermarket, choose produce that is not in prepackaged containers.
* Bring your own bag. Reuse bags and containers. Maintain a supply of bags on hand for shopping trips, or choose your canvas bag bag to the grocery store.
* Consider detergent. Products often require less packaging, leading to less power to transport into the store and less plastic to recycle. All small & mighty is a new concentrated laundry detergent (a single 32-ounce bottle cleans as many loads as the regular 100-ounce bottle). Along with packaging, the formulation includes 74% less water than regular detergent.
* Choose to reuse. Reach for reusable items like fabric scraps, sponges or dishcloths rather than paper towels.
* Recharge and renew. Use rechargeable batteries and recycle batteries to decrease litter and keep toxic metals out of the environment.
* Purchase smart. Look with the Energy Star label and electronic equipment with warranties that are good.
* Get Famous. Reuse scrap paper and envelopes. Reuse save ribbons, tissue paper, gift boxes as well as wrapping paper. Conserve yourself colored paper, boxes, egg cartons and other items for crafts and arts projects.
* Think thrifty. Give clothes or sell the items in tag sales or stores, fairs, bazaars. Share hand-me-down clothes with family and neighbors. – NU
