Educators have discovered that getting their pupils interested in reading is no simple undertaking. However one teacher in Queens Village, N.Y., has discovered an innovative way to help keep pupils inside her sixth-grade class focused and entertained while enhancing their reading abilities.
Bertha Cuascuta literacy trainer at The Jean Nuzzi School agreed to take part in a pilot program called Read-A-Movie. The program was made by SFK Media Especially for Kids Corp. and is a part of their firm’s suite of courses that aim to enhance reading-readiness and techniques.
The program revolves round the Reading Movies, which combine reading with entertaining pictures will help teach vocabulary and improve comprehension of SFK Media.
The films use Action Captions, an advanced technology that shows the dialogue in real time, on the screen as text, without interrupting the flow of the film. Researchers and educators indicate that these Action Captions activate the cognitive elements of their brain so that the growth of both spoken and reading language skills occurs naturally.
“My students had no problem recalling the facts and explaining concepts and details,” Cuascut said. “On evaluations, projects and other work, students exhibited greater understanding, improved vocabulary and an greater desire to find out more.”
The films are available in such classics as”20,000 Leagues Beneath the Sea,””Tales of Gulliver’s Travels” and”The Trojan Horse,” and come as interactive DVDs that include vocabulary training, quizzes and other actions.
Cuascut said her pupils seemed to have the ability to identify with the child actors from the films, which she said further sparked their interest and kept their attention.
“It struck me that even those students who generally are fidgety and distracting others were rather paying close attention to what had been happening in the film,” she explained.
