All parents can benefit from external guidance. This article has a variety of suggestions to help you through some of those difficult times.
Stop and consider the words you use with your child, and what they mean. You want your kids to feel like they have complete faith in your honesty.
After clearing space on the counter, let your child lie on a towel while you allow water from the kitchen faucet to run over the scalp and hair. This can help alleviate the fear of being dunked and their dislike of water in their face.
Even dedicated parents need some time for themselves. You can let family and friends care for your children for a few hours to even a whole weekend. When you don’t get a little time off from the kids, you can become stressed and, in turn, stress the entire family.
If children live in your home, avoid smoking in the house. It is actually a good idea to quit smoking altogether, especially if you have children. Secondhand smoke is very dangerous to others. Exposure to second-hand smoke puts children at higher risk for respiratory conditions like pneumonia, asthma or bronchitis.
Cucumbers, carrots or sour pickles can be put into a mesh teether and given to a baby who is having a painful time when cutting their teeth. Other things can also provide relief, but children generally prefer chewing on something that has some taste. The longer your child chews, the better they will feel throughout the day.
Establishing clear boundaries and using positive reinforcement will lead to happier, more well adjusted children. Rather than saying “no hitting,” for instance, tell children to “touch gently.”
In order to prevent your child from becoming uninterested with their toys, take out toys from the depths of their toy chest. Toddlers typically lose interest in a toy within a few days unless it is a beloved favorite. This will save you the expense of buying new toys regularly and your child will have more fun discovering and rediscovering toys.
Children have a natural need for independence. Give them household chores so they will feel the sense of independence that they need. When unloading the dishwasher, hand the spoons to your child and let him put them away in their proper place. When you are folding clothes, have your little one help you by sorting out a load of socks. These little tasks will help your child feel involved and responsible, while helping you out at the same time.
Team Sports
Team sports should help your child develop their self-esteem. Giving your child the opportunity and encouragement to participate in team sports, and being there to watch their games, will strengthen your relationship, create shared memories, and build important life skills.
It is important that parents of children with ADHD keep them occupied with positive activities to avoid the occurrence of negative behavior. If these children are not always kept busy, they may not behave appropriately. Try to take your child to the park for one hour every day. Encourage bike riding or some other very active pursuit for a half an hour a day.
When children misbehave, the best tool to use is positive reinforcement. Sometimes children aren’t exactly sure how to express their feelings. Show your children how to express feelings and give them the opportunity to practice their own expression.
An essential practice of good parenting is praising children when they behave well. Children are prone to crave attention. If they don’t get it by behaving, they’ll misbehave. Ignoring a child’s good behavior can be very dangerous, because it can tempt the child to display poor behavior just because they are so desperate for attention.
You should create a written list and post them for your children. Tell them the consequences for breaking any. By setting boundaries for your children to follow, you will be illustrating to them that you care enough about what they do. Rules will make your parenting job much easier.
When potty training, having a schedule of going to the bathroom every few hours is essential. They haven’t quite learned yet how to communicate to you that they need to eliminate and may only do so after it’s too late. Taking your child to potty every few hours is the best way to prevent accidents from occurring. These routine trips may remind your child that he or she needed to go.
You don’t want them to stress out, but they should realize that they are going to have to face many challenges throughout their lives. Your child can learn how to better handle challenges by watching you and your spouse resolve your own. It will also help them to understand what is going on in the world.
Explain to your child what bullying is and why it is wrong. Encourage them to tell you about their experiences and share your own. Try to learn about the procedures and rules in place at your children’s school and be certain your kids know where to go for help if an incident occurs.
Look for ways to expose your child to things that will stimulate his senses. For example, when you are making gingerbread cookies let them smell nutmeg, cinnamon and ginger to help develop their sense of smell. Look for things that have beautiful colors, interesting textures, strong scents, appealing tastes and fascinating shapes that you can show to your child.
Create a chart that will help your children visualize their accomplishments anytime you try to teach them something new. For example, on a chart with 20 squares, you can put a sticker on a square each time he does the new task. Once a certain number of stickers have been placed on the chart, it is time for a reward. Young minds need reinforcement for good behavior and will work toward a goal if it is a concrete one that can be clearly seen and understood.
